304 & 316 The Best Machining Grade

304 stainless steel grade:
Ni - 9.25, Cr - 19.0, Fe - Balance, Si - 1.00, Mn - 2.00, C - 0.080, P - 0.045, S - 0.030

Stainless Steel 304 Chemical Properties:
It is still sometimes referred to by its old name 18/8 which is derived from the nominal composition of type 304 being 18% chromium and 8% nickel.

Stainless steel 304 is an austenitic grade that can be severely deep drawn. This property has resulted in 304 being the dominant grade used in applications like sinks and saucepans.

Type 304L is the low carbon version of Stainless steel 304. It is used in heavy gauge components for improved weldability. Some products such as plate and pipe may be available as “dual certified” material that meets the criteria for both 304 and 304L.

304H, a high carbon content variant, is also available for use at high temperatures.

Property data given in this document is typical for bar products covered by EN 10269:2013. ASTM, EN or other standards may cover products sold. It is reasonable to expect specifications in these standards to be similar but not necessarily identical to those given in this datasheet.

316 Stainless Steel Grade:

Chemical Formula Of 316 Stainless Steel Grade:

Fe, <0.03% C, 16-18.5% Cr, 10-14% Ni, 2-3% Mo, <2% Mn, <1% Si, <0.045% P, <0.03% S

Grade 316 is the standard molybdenum-bearing grade, second in importance to 304 amongst the austenitic stainless steels. The molybdenum gives 316 better overall corrosion resistant properties than Grade 304, particularly higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.

Grade 316L, the low carbon version of 316 and is immune from sensitization (grain boundary carbide precipitation). Thus it is extensively used in heavy gauge welded components (over about 6mm). There is commonly no appreciable price difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel.

The austenitic structure also gives these grades excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures.

Compared to chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels, 316L stainless steel offers higher creep, stress to rupture and tensile strength at elevated temperatures.

Corrosion Resistance:

Excellent in a range of atmospheric environments and many corrosive media - generally more resistant than 304.

Key Properties

These properties are specified for the flat-rolled product (plate, sheet, and coil) in ASTM A240/A240M. Similar but not necessarily identical properties are specified for other products such as pipe and bar in their respective specifications.

Applications

Typical applications include:

• Food preparation equipment particularly in chloride environments.
• Pharmaceuticals
• Marine applications
• Architectural applications
• Medical implants, including pins, screws and orthopedic implants like total hip and knee replacements
• Fasteners

Applications and Uses of Stainless Steel in Automotive Industry

Did You Know?  45 to 50% of automotive exhaust systems are made of stainless steel. Probably, we all are aware of establishing uses of stainless steel in different industries as per their required proportions but at Automotives behind the scenes are quite different, as you read the fact – the ratio of stainless steel is quite higher than other applicants of stainless steel. So, is it bad/good that Automotives have adopted stainless steel? And if yes, what characteristics of stainless steel made the automotive industry to adapt this higher ratio? Let’s get on to answering step-by-step, when it comes to automotive there are several requirements that need to be fulfilled including a lightweight yet safer experience, environmental-friendly, and affordability. Now steel can also deliver those segments so why stainless steel and not just steel for automotive, forgot!? “RUST” can easily eat away the whole engine compartment, can weaken exhaust system mounts, and be able to create air leaks.

Stainless Steel Use In Oil & Gas Industry

Stainless steel is the widely used metal in the oil and gas industry, contributing to the growth of a robust global economy. This development and globalization of the stainless steel sector paved the way for several growth pathways. Stainless steel is a necessary and fundamental part of every industry and enables creativity in applied form and practices scope in important engineering services. Due to its dynamism, stainless steel has spread worldwide and is the largest industry involved with the oil and gas sector on a global scale. The usage of Stainless steel in the oil and gas sectors is critical as it brings several initiatives together. It is the metal that is most frequently utilized in operating and extracting methods, which is necessary for refineries and natural gas plants, and are required for the manufacture of energy-related products.   The Usage Of Stainless Steel In Oil & Gas Industry Stainless steel includes 10.5 % chromium, which forms a passive coating of
